What is SEEBASE®?

Geognostics are experts in the integrated interpretation of basement and basin geology specialising in a ‘bottom-up’ approach to understanding crustal and basement structure, tectonics, basement terranes and composition, encapsulated in the SEEBASE® workflow.

The SEEBASE® model is an integrated, spatially-continuous, fully attributed, crust and basement model that defines the 3D geometry of basement and provides insights into the structural style and tectonic setting of basin systems and basement geology. The characteristics of basement provide first-order controls on the architecture of an evolving basin.

By building our unique Geognostics ‘bottom-up’ model of basement and basin evolution, we can provide critical knowledge for exploration of subsurface resources – including conventional and unconventional oil and gas, minerals, geothermal potential, groundwater and other emerging high-value commodities such as hydrogen and helium.

Key components of the SEEBASE® model include:

  • Depth to Moho (base of the Lower Crust)

  • Basement Terrane Interpretation

  • Radiogenic Basement Thickness

  • Basement Composition and Heat Production

  • SEEBASE® Depth to Basement and Total Sediment Thickness

SEEBASE® Depth to Basement

Our signature SEEBASE® Depth to Basement  is a structurally enhanced depth-to-basement model that defines the 3D geometry of sub-surface basin systems. It is built from a proprietary workflow that uses the integration, interpretation and calibration of a range of geophysical and geological datasets.

SEEBASE Depth to Basement is the industry-standard solution that aims to:

  • integrate all available geophysical and geological data with intelligent surface interpretation

  • define basin shape, depth and size, and can be used to understand source kitchens, migration pathways and charge focus areas

  • provide crucial input into basin models and reduce risk in both frontier and mature basins

How is SEEBASE Developed?

In contrast to basement models produced by an inversion algorithm, the SEEBASE workflow starts with state-of-the-art processing and enhancements of potential field datasets. The SEEBASE interpreter incorporates constraining data from a wide range of geological and geophysical datasets. Together with our deep understanding of the nature of basement, structural and tectonic processes, the SEEBASE interpreter provides a depth-to-basement model that is consistent with all available datasets, modelling and current knowledge.

SEEBASE is the result of a number of calibration and integration steps including:

  • Extensive literature review

  • State-of-the-art geophysical processing, enhancements and imaging

  • Interpretation of basement terranes

  • Review  and update of plate reconstructions using the GEM Crustal Framework and Tectonic Module and third party published models.

  • Integration of tectonic events and structural responses

  • Assessment and integration of crustal architecture

  • Gravity and magnetic modelling

  • Calibration to seismic, wells, outcrop, rock properties, etc
